1st SESSION OF THE 9TH SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE OF LAFIA (Anglican Communion), HELD AT ST. JAMES CATHEDRAL, LAFIA FROM FRIDAY 21ST – SUNDAY 23RD JUNE, 2024, UNDER THE PRESIDENCY OF THE RT. REV. GODWIN A. ROBINSON, BISHOP OF LAFIA.

The following communique was issued at the end of the proceedings:-

1. In line with the synod’s theme, “In Everything Give Thanks” 1st Thessalonians 5:18. The Synod charged all Christians to live a life of gratitude at all times.

2. The Synod says that thanking God during difficult and challenging times helps us to trust God and live within His will and protection.

3. The Synod says giving gratitude to God in thanksgiving commands multiplication of blessings from God. Jer. 30:19-20

4. The Synod says that the core of “giving thanks” transcends material blessing. Thanksgiving is ultimately about appreciating God Himself as the source of all good. In effect “giving Thanks” in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 is a call to cultivate a grateful heart and a deep appreciation for His love and grace.

5. On the other hand, The Synod says grumbling, doubts, ignorance, pride, bitterness, anger, self-centeredness, and a critical spirit are hindrances to thanksgiving and that Christians should strive to avoid all these to overcome just as our biblical examples overcame.

6. The Synod commends the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Ahmed Bola Tinubu GCFR for the efforts being made to tackle the many problems in Nigeria including economic stability, security, and social well-being of Nigeria as the most populous democratic country in Africa.

7. The Synod observes that the removal of fuel subsidy leads to the present hardship in Nigeria cascading into hyperinflation of goods and services, thereby impacting negatively across the board in Nigeria

8. The Synod appeals to Nigerians to stop the Dollarization of Nigeria’s economy which has potentially weakened the Naira and further heightened inflation and encouraged the migration of young Nigerians out of the country that is JAPA syndrome with the devastating impact on brain drain of medical and academic personnel out of the country.

9. The Synod commends the Nasarawa State government with the leadership of His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule and His Excellency Dr. Emmanuel A. Akabe, the Deputy Governor for their relentless efforts in providing purposeful and inclusive leadership for the people of the State.

10. The Synod commends the policy thrust of the Governor which centers on maintaining Peace and sanity in the State, in the trouble areas particularly, the setting up of Committee of Peace and Reconciliation in the Egbira and Bassa crisis in Toto Local Government Area, chaired by HRM Hon. Justice (Dr) Sidi Bage Muhammed I. JSC (Rtd), Emir of Lafia and chairman of Nasarawa State Council of Chiefs and the Interrogative Committee on the Odin and Ebe crisis in Udege Development Area chaired by HRM Prof Muhammed Bako III, Emir, of Karshi.

11. The Synod says this year’s Synod is a Trinity Thanksgiving to the Diocese for the following reasons viz: – Nigeria’s uninterrupted Democracy from the year 1999 to date is 25years, Creation of the Diocese of Lafia is 25years, and the Marriage of the Bishop and Mama Lafia Rt. Rev. Godwin Adeyi and Mrs. Afiniki Robinson are 25years this year; all these call for joyful thanksgiving to God Almighty.
