THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 3RD SESSION OF THE 14TH SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE OF AKURE, CHURCH OF NIGERIA, ANGLICAN COMMUNION HELD AT ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCH, AYETORO, IJARE FROM THURSDAY 4TH TO SUNDAY 7TH JULY, 2024.

 THEMEBREAKING THE SHACKLES OF SIN

What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law; for I had not known lust, except the law had said, thou shall not covet” – Romans 7:7

As the elders bow before the throne, with a grateful heart we worship and adore the Ancient of days for the grace to witness the last session of the 14th Synod, led by the President of Synod; The Archbishop of Ondo Ecclesiastical Province and Bishop of Diocese of Akure; The Most Revd. Simeon Oluwole Borokini, Ph. D, CFAT under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

BREAKING THE SHACKLES OF SIN: The theme for this year’s Synod focuses on one of the fundamental challenges of humanity – SIN. And for this reason Christ came to save his people from their sin (Matthew 1:21).

It is with great delight that Synod appreciates and congratulates the Archbishop and Diocesan for the successful completion of the 14th synod of the Diocese and prays for more growth and development of the Diocese.

STATE OF THE NATION

UNEMPLOYMENT

Synod is greatly concerned about the increasing rate of unemployment which has remained the bane of our society and therefore beseeches the Federal and State Governments to consider vocational and entrepreneurship training/ development as a major way out of this problem.

POWER SUPPLY

The worsening epileptic power supply coupled with unbearably high monthly tariffs is of major concern and is considered as being unfair on Nigerians.  Synod, therefore appeals to Mr President to put in all efforts to ensure that power is available to all Nigerians uninterruptedly as this will constitute the beginning of breakthrough.

FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL

At the inauguration of the present administration, fuel subsidy was declared “gone”, in anticipation that the huge amount spent on subsidising the cost of fuel importation, would be re-invested with the hope that this would better the lot of the masses. However, the masses are the ones bearing the brunt of this policy.

Synod therefore advises that Government should invest appropriately the gains of fuel subsidy removal in order to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.

INSECURITY

Synod acknowledges the fact that one of the major duties of Government is to protect lives and properties of its citizenry. It is in this respect that the Federal and State Governments are urged to continue in their efforts at ensuring the security of lives and properties of Nigerians.

Synod commends our security agencies both at the national and state levels in their efforts at combating the issue of insecurity confronting the Nation at this time, but urges them to improve on same so that the issue of insecurity can be brought to the barest minimum.

ECONOMY

The high cost of living occasioned largely by the floating of the naira and the fuel Subsidy removal on the entire populace has made life unbearable for many Nigerians. The nation’s economy is highly unpredictable and unstable resulting in astronomic increase in prices of fuel, food stuffs, goods and other commodities; this has brought untold hardship on the citizenry.

Synod therefore urges both the Federal and State Governments to urgently ensure adequate implementation of necessary measures to immediately cushion the very harsh effect of the floating of naira and removal of fuel subsidy on the general populace.

Synod urges both Federal and State Governments to urgently take steps that will help revive our ailing and already battered economy. This would in turn reduce the high level of unemployment in the country, and in the long run, stem the current tide of mass exodus of our best brains and productive youth populace to other countries in search of greener pastures.

ONDO STATE

DEATH OF ARAKUNRIN OLUWAROTIMI ODUNAYO AKEREDOLU (SAN) FORMER GOVERNOR OF ONDO STATE

Synod commiserates with the immediate family, people and the Government of Ondo State on the shocking and devastating death of the former governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu (SAN) and prays that God grants his soul eternal repose.

In the same vein, Synod welcomes the new Governor, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa and his Deputy, His Excellency Olayide Adelami to the helms of affairs of Ondo State, and prays for God’s wisdom, strength and guidance for them to pilot the affairs of the State to an enviable position.

GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION

In November this year, the People of Ondo State will be going to the polls to elect a Governor that will run the affairs of the state for the next 4 years. Synod prays God to give us a man after His own heart, who loves and fears the Lord with the love of the masses at heart.

CONCLUSION

Synod urges all and sundry to know that it is righteousness that exalts a Nation, but sin is a reproach to any people. In our quest for a better Nation, we must strive to break the shackles of sin that hold us bound as a People. As the Scripture says in 2 Chronicles 7: 14 that “if my people which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and forgive their sin, and heal their land”.
