THE COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE THIRD SESSION OF THE FOURTEENTH SYNOD OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF WARRI HELD AT ST. LUKE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, KOKORI FROM SATURDAY, 4TH – WEDNESDAY, 8TH MAY, 2024.
1. PREAMBLE
The Third Session of the Fourteenth Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Warri was held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, Kokori under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and presided over by his lordship, the Rt. Rev’d Christian Esezi Ide, JP: Dip.Th; NCE; B.A (Ed); MLS; the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Warri and President of the Synod.
In attendance were, the wife of the Bishop, Mrs. Patience Okpako Esezi Ide, the Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Bendel, the Most Rev’d Cyril Odiboroghene Odutemu, Ph.D, JP; Rt. Rev’d Vincent Omashehor Muoghere former Bishop of Ughelli Diocese, His Excellency Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, ably represented by Senator Emmanuel Agwariavwodo, Synod Guest Speaker, The Rt. Rev’d Ebenezer O. Saiki, JP, Bishop of Diocese of Akoko-Edo, Bishops from other Dioceses and Synod delegates.
2. SYNOD THEME
The Synod theme: OVERCOMING: The Birthright of Christians “(1John 5:5)” is linked to the last year’s theme: “Spiritual Wilderness: God’s Way to Draw Our Attention” in the sense that every child of God who emerges from Spiritual wilderness with spiritual energy is an overcomer.
- Synod notes that the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross has brought to an end Satan’s authority and it has released believers from their captivity.
- Synod thus notes that all true believers (Christians) who believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came in the flesh to die on the cross for the redemption of mankind overcome the challenges of life such as victory over needs, lack, sickness and diseases, fear, pain, disappointment, doubt, poverty, sin, etc.
- Synod therefore calls on all Christians to live by faith in Jesus, the Son of God to meet all our needs and to overcome anything that the devil may bring on our way.
THE STATE OF THE NATION
THE AFTERMATH OF THE 2023 GENERAL ELECTION
- The Synod congratulates President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his victory at the Supreme Court; he thus becomes the 16th President of our beloved country. Synod therefore calls on his Excellency, the President to rise to the occasion of the numerous challenges facing our nation and implement his renewed Hope Agenda for the benefits of the citizen.
ECONOMY
- Synod notes that the Nigeria economy is now lagging behind South Africa and Egypt as the 3rd largest in Africa, due to its diverse challenges. Synod further notes that reliance on external borrowing to Fund 2024 budget exposes the Nigeria economy to exchange rate risks. Synod therefore calls on Government of President Tinubu to have a rethink in the interest of the future generation and stop any proposed external borrowing plans.
HIGH DEBT LEVELS
- Synod is worried that high debt levels have the potential to erode investors’ confidence, particularly among foreign investors, resulting in capital flight, thereby negatively impacting the Nigeria stock market & overall economic stability. Synod therefore calls on the Government of President Bola Tinubu to effectively implement fiscal policies and debt management strategies to mitigates risks and foster a resilient & prosperous economy.
NEW CONSTITUTION
- Synod supports our Primate, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry Ndukuba, for his renewed call for a totally civilian and democratic constitution made by a sovereign ethnics representatives and not the continuous amendment of a military formulated constitution. By so doing this will reflect the birthing of the Government of the people in a new Nigeria.
HIKE IN ELECTRICITY TARIFFS
- Synod condemned the recent hike in electricity tariffs across Nigeria by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). Synod notes that the abrupt hike, places an unbearable burden on the already stressed populace, exacerbating economic hardships and widening the chasm of inequality. Synod therefore calls on the Federal Government (NERC) to reverse the said hike.
INSECURITY
- Synod reiterates with great concern the issue of insecurity across the nation, the wanton killings and destruction of lives and properties, kidnapping in recent times, Synod therefore calls on the Federal Government and the Security agencies to continue to uphold the issue of protection of lives and properties and not treat same with levity.
DELTA STATE
- The Synod congratulates Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, the Governor of Delta State for his victory at the Supreme Court.
- Synod commends the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for signing a N78 billion contract for the construction of three flyovers, a cloverleaf, pedestrian bridges & ancillary roads expansion. Synod however calls on the Governor to complete the said projects on time.
DELTA, NNPCL, FIRM TO DEVELOP FLOATING GAS PLANT
- Synod commends the State Government for signing the tripate project for the development of first floating liquefied natural Gas in Nigeria. Synod opined that amongst other benefits this will help mitigate the environmental hazards in the Niger Delta by reducing gas flaring as Delta will switch from using the Kerosine and firewood to a cleaner energy.
DELTA STATE CONTRIBUTORY HEALTH INSURANCE SCHEME
- Synod commends the Delta State Governor for implementing the Delta state contributory health insurance scheme for indigent persons which is presently been enjoyed across the state.
OKOLOBA/OKWUAMA CRISIS
- Synod condemned the brutal killing of 17 Nigeria Army Personnel at Okwuama community on the 14th day of March, 2024. Synod therefore urges the military to exercise restraint in how they spread their dragnets to arrest the culprits, ensure that innocent persons are not punished for what they know nothing about. Synod therefore calls on the Government of Delta State to ensure that Okwuama people return to their ancestral home.
