COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE FIRST SESSION OF THE EIGHTH SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE, HELD AT ST. DAVID’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, UWENUJIE, IRRUA FROM THURSDAY, 27TH – SUNDAY, 30TH JUNE, 2024.

PREAMBLE

The First Session of the Eighth Synod of the Diocese of Esan, Bendel Ecclesiastical Province, The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), took place at St. David’s Anglican Church, Uwenujie-Irrua. The Synod deliberated on the theme, “Jesus: Unicus Omnino Ille Orbisterrarum” (“Jesus: Unique in all the World”), with the text taken from Philippians, Chapter Two, Verses five to eleven. It was the fourth Synod held under the episcopacy of the Rt. Rev’d Gabriel Oseikhuenmen Elabor, OSA, FECT, JP; as Bishop of the Diocesan See of Esan and by implication, President of the Synod Session in focus.

The Synod focused on the theme “Jesus: Unique in all the World”. Flowing from the Synod sermons and lectures, in alignment with the Synod text, it is fitting to summarise the Synod message to be “let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 2:5-11), depicting Christ uniqueness and the need to follow in the footsteps of His uniqueness in all our lives dealings

COMMUNIQUÉ

Arising from the contents of the Charge presented by the Diocesan and President of the Synod Session, The Rt. Rev’d G.O. Elabor, OSA, FECT, JP; and reports and reviews from the fifteen Archdeaconries and Chapelry, and other areas of interest, Synod issued the following communiqué:

  • Synod Theme: Synod emphasizes the relevance of Christ’s uniqueness in a world grappling with challenges and urged individuals to reflect Christ’s uniqueness in their lives;
    • Commendation of Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki: Synod acknowledges Governor Obaseki’s contributions to various sectors of Edo State in his administration and encourages him for a peaceful transition as his tenure approaches its end;
    • Message to Edo People/Governorship Candidates: Synod sues for peaceful and respectful election campaigns, emphasizing pertinent issues over personal attacks;
    • Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma: Synod calls on Governor Godwin Obaseki for a prompt constitution of a Governing Council for Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and adequate funding to restore the University’s former glory;
    • Involvement of Christians in Politics and Women in Leadership: Synod advocates for Christians’ active participation in politics and emphasizes gender inclusivity in leadership roles.
    • Takeover of Mission Schools: Synod calls on the government of Edo State to release Mission-owned schools for better moral impartation and education management;
    • State of the Nigerian Economy: Synod expresses grave concerns over rising prices of goods and commodities, insecurity in the land, and calls on the Federal Government for urgent economic reforms, to alleviate hardships;
    • Corruption: Synod condemns corruption in government and all walks of life and stresses the need for sincerity and commitment in the fight against corruption, which has become hydra-headed;
    • Security and State Police: Synod recommends the involvement of religious leaders of good reputation in the selection process of the proposed State Police to enhance quality in recruitment and community relations;
    • National Health: Synod advises on precautionary measures against the current cholera outbreak in Nigeria and other diseases and early detection of diseases like prostate cancer;
    • Developmental Strides in the Diocese of Esan: Synod commends the Diocesan, The Rt. Rev’d G.O. Elabor for his initiatives and support for Church projects in the Diocese;
    • Commiseration: Synod offers condolences to the Diocesan and his siblings on the passing to glory of their mother, Late Mrs. Victoria Elabor.

      CONCLUSION

      The Synod thanks God for the successful outcome of the First Session of the the Eighth Synod, under the leadership of The Rt. Rev’d G. O. Elabor, OSA, FECT, JP.
