RESOLUTION/COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE THIRD SESSION OF THE FIFTH SYNOD OF THE DIOCESE OF ENUGU NORTH HELD FROM THURSDAY 11TH TO SUNDAY 14TH JULY, 2024, AT CHRIST ANGLICAN CHURCH, UMUAKA, NSUDE.

INTRODUCTION

When all fails, God cannot fail, so ride on the wind and shadow of the Almighty.

Whereas, the Third Session of the Fifth Synod was held under the leading and protection of the Almighty God with the Theme “BE STILL” (Psalm 46:10). It was presided over by the Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Enugu North and President of the Synod, His Lordship the Rt. Rev. Dr. Sosthenes Ikechukwu Eze and his amiable wife, Mrs. Faith Chukwunenye Eze, the President of Mother’s Union.

By the grace of God, Rt. Rev. Chidi C. Oparaojiaku, Bishop, Diocese of Ohaji/ Egbema was the Guest Speaker.

Synod admired that the Theme of this year’s Synod “BE SILL”(Psalm 46:10) was a thought  provoking Theme of 2024 as we all see things unfolds around us daily. Synod had an indebt and systematic Study of the Bible ably handled by Venerable Gospel Onuchukwu from the Diocese of Evo as the Bible Study Leader.

THEME OF THE SYNOD:

Synod notes that the theme “Be Still” (Psalm 46: 10) is apt at this time in the life of our nation when men’s heart seen to be failing them due to hardship arising from hunger, insecurity, extreme bloodshed, kidnapping, high cost  of living, corruption, insensitive leadership, failure in leadership, etc.

Synod enjoins us that our hearts need to be still in the face of these challenges. We need to heed Jesus admonition in John 14:1, “let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in me”. Synod urges all and sundry to remain calm, and look unto God to see us through.

NATIONAL WELLBEING OF THE PEOPLE

Synod laments that due to the static economic quagmire our nation is gradually coming to a state pandemonium except for God’s imminent intervention.

Synod observes with joy the grant of autonomy to the Local Government. Synod also noted that the challenge of developing a State is not a leadership challenge alone but collaboration and synergy between the leadership and followership.

Synod abhors the alarming and worrisome state of insecurity in the nation.

GOVERNMENT POLICIES;

Synod observes that a good number of national policies are largely influenced favour of the governing “Cabal” while the majority of the people suffer the consequences.

Synod urges the government to think it wise to release Mr. Nnamdi Kalu (the leader of IPOB) for the peace of the South East. Synod urges the president to also consider his pronouncement to create a new ministry of Livestock Development; this is not necessary for now in the face of the call for reduction in the cost of governance as she feels this is duplication of function where the ministry of agriculture exists.

Synod wants the Federal and State Government to come to a quick resolution of the minimum wage issue to avoid unnecessary strike and improve the living standard of workers and others.

FUEL SUBSIDY

Synod holds that the decision to remove fuel subsidy should be accompanied by a well thought-out strategy that considers mitigating measure for the vulnerable population and promotes sustainable economic growth.

Synod recommends that the Government should carefully evaluate the impact of fuel subsidy   removal on individuals and businesses and provide palliatives and other economic relief programs to cushion the adverse effect.

NIGERIA DEBT BURDEN

Synod notes with great concern that the debt profile of Nigeria has been steadily on the rise over the past decade. Synod observes that seeking loans for critical infrastructure and development projects is not inherently bad in itself; it is however worrisome that Nigerians are yet to see anything from the quantum of our indebtedness. Synod calls for transparency and accountability in the loan utilization; this will build public trust and strengthen the need for the loan facilities in the first place.

CHURCH AND INVESTMENT

Synod calls on every individual and Parish to go into intensive farming. Synod wishes all should invest through viable ventures like storage of agricultural produce, Palm oil, Tapioca (abacha), Rice, etc. that can be sold when there prices appreciates.

Synod charges us to stopkeeping money in current account for a long time. Use saving account and pull fund to current account for transactions; more so the money notin immediate use should be fixed at least for short periods like 3 months and more to get interest.Other areas of investment that should be considered include: Kerosene station, Car wash, Barbing Salon, Planting of economic trees etc.

CONCLUSION

Synod theme gives us the assurance that the Lord knows what is best for us and will always provide all that we need no matter the condition. Synod therefore enjoins all to trust in God knowing that he is there for us.
