Biography of The Bishop of the Diocese of Uyo – The Rt. Rev. Owen Amos Ukafia

The Rt. Rev. Owen Amos Ukafia, JP, was born on December 5, 1962, in Okoroete, Eastern Obolo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, to the late Pa Amos Sylvanus Ukafia and Mrs. Roseline Amos Ukafia.

He began his formal education at St. Silas Anglican Primary School, Okoroete, and continued at Government Secondary School, Ngo, in Rivers State. He later completed his secondary education at Esetang High School, Ekim, Mkpat Enin Local Government Area.

Following his early employment as an Account Clerk with Ikot Abasi Local Government Council, he responded to the call to ministry. Through the sponsorship and support of the late Most Rev. Emmanuel Nglass, he gained admission into Trinity Theological College, Umuahia, for theological training. In 1996, he pursued studies in Philosophy at the University of Calabar, and later obtained a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta, in 2012.

He was ordained a Deacon in 1994 by the Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Nglass, then Bishop of the Diocese of Uyo, and priested the following year. He was subsequently appointed Vicar of St. John the Baptist Church, Ikot Ekpene. He was preferred a Canon of the Cathedral Church of All Saints in 2002 and collated Archdeacon in 2006 by the same bishop.

Over the years, Bishop Ukafia has held several key leadership and ministerial roles within the Diocese of Uyo, including:

  • Chaplain, Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF), during which the diocesan AYF was formally inaugurated

  • Pioneer Diocesan Missioner, where he led the planting of numerous churches

  • Clerical Synod Secretary (2004–2012), working with Bishops Emmanuel Nglass and Isaac Orama

  • Bishop’s Examining Chaplain

  • Coordinator, Church Planting Institute

  • Chairman, Clergy Association (2017–2022)

  • Lay Readers’ Chaplain

  • A founding force in the establishment of EFAC (Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion) in the Diocese in 1996

  • Crisis Intervention Leader at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Oron, in 2017

He has served across nearly all the archdeaconries in the Diocese of Uyo and currently ministers as the Archdeacon of Eastern Obolo Archdeaconry, stationed at his home parish, St. Silas Anglican Church, Okoroete.

Beyond ecclesiastical work, Bishop Ukafia contributed significantly to public service. From 2001 to 2008, he served as an Administrative Officer in the Akwa Ibom State Civil Service. He was also Vice Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) from 2016 to 2021 and has been Coordinator of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Eastern Obolo Chapter since 2020.

Bishop Owen Amos Ukafia is known as a mission-minded leader, seasoned administrator, and reconciler. He is happily married to Lady Zilpah Owen Ukafia, and their union is blessed with children.
