The Rt. Rev. Godwin Adeyi Robinson was born on the 22nd of February, 1966, in Oiji, Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, Nigeria, to Mr. and Mrs. Robinson Edikwu. His father, an ex-serviceman, was regularly transferred across various military formations, which gave young Godwin exposure to life in different regions of Nigeria. He grew up fluent in Idoma, Hausa, and English.
He began his early education at St. Peter’s Primary School, Bukuru, in Plateau State, and completed it at Army Children’s School in Otukpo, Benue State. Between 1979 and 1984, he was among the third set of students at Command Secondary School, Kaduna. In October 1984, shortly after finishing secondary school, he had a life-changing personal encounter with Jesus Christ. This marked the beginning of his spiritual journey and eventual call into the Sacred Ministry, despite facing initial opposition and challenges.
In 1990, he was admitted to Immanuel College of Theology, Ibadan, to begin his formal theological training. Over the years, Bishop Robinson has pursued a rigorous academic and ministerial path. He holds a Diploma in Theology from Immanuel College (1993), an Advanced Diploma in Public Administration from Benue State Polytechnic (1995), a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from the ECWA Theological Seminary, Jos (2005), and a Master of Arts in Theology from Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta (2014). He is currently completing a Ph.D. in Philosophy at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, with an expected graduation year of 2025. His additional training includes courses at the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Topo, Badagry, the Second International Missions Conference in Ghana, and an Advanced Management Training for Senior Clergy at the Ibru Ecumenical Centre.
Although his Christian foundation was in the Methodist Church Nigeria—where he was baptized on April 15, 1978, and confirmed on April 19, 1987—he transitioned into the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) in 2006. This move was formalized when he was received into the Diocese of Otukpo by the Rt. Rev. D. K. Bello (Rtd).
In 2011, he was posted to the Diocese of Kubwa where he served at Christ Church, Saburi, first as a Curate, then as Vicar and Supervising Priest. He was later preferred a Statutory Canon before he proceeded for his master’s degree in Theology. In 2013, upon returning, he was posted to St. Peter’s Church, Karu, as Vicar and Supervising Priest of the Karu Archdeaconry. On October 18, 2015, he was preferred an Archdeacon by the Rt. Rev. Duke T. Akamisoko and posted to St. Andrew’s Church, Kubwa, which later hosted the Church of Nigeria Standing Committee in February 2016.
He was elected Bishop of Lafia at the Episcopal Synod held on February 21, 2017, at St. Peter’s Cathedral Church, Ake, Abeokuta. Coincidentally, he awoke to the news of his election on his birthday, February 22, describing it as a “second birth.” His consecration took place on May 7, 2017, at the Cathedral Church of the Transfiguration of Our Lord (CATOL), Owerri. He was enthroned as the Bishop of Lafia on May 13, 2017. Following the retirement of Rt. Rev. Nathan Inyom in October 2024, Bishop Robinson was appointed by the Primate of All Nigeria to serve as Supervising Bishop of the Diocese of Makurdi.
In the spirit of Christian unity, Bishop Robinson plays key roles in ecumenical work. He currently serves as Chairman of the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) Nasarawa State Chapter and as a member of the Anglican-Methodist International Commission. He has represented the Church of Nigeria in various national and international gatherings, including the 29th General Assembly of the CCN, the Africa Convention of Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship International (FGBMFI), GAFCON III in Jerusalem (2018), GAFCON V in Kigali, Rwanda (2023), and the AACC General Assembly in Abuja (2024).
Bishop Robinson is married to Mrs. Afiniki Ikokaza Robinson, a New Testament Theologian with a Master’s Degree from Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary. Their union is blessed with four children—two daughters, Praises and Nmesoma, and two sons, Gracious and Maxwell.
He is widely respected for his passionate commitment to evangelism, theological education, and church growth. A preacher, teacher, and administrator, Bishop Godwin A. Robinson continues to inspire and lead with a deep devotion to God and a heart for the Body of Christ.
“May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify His servant through and through. May his whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The One who calls is faithful, and He will do it.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:23–24
