The Most Rev. Isaac Chijioke Nwaobia, PhD, JP, FCBA, FICM, is a covenant child and a distinguished servant in the vineyard of the Lord. He was born on November 10, 1962, into the devout Christian family of Mazi Silas Erondu Nwaobia and Mrs. Eunice Nwanyinma Nwaobia of Umuama, Amaku Nvosi in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria. He is the third son and fourth child in a family of six surviving siblings.
He began his early education at Amaku Nvosi Community School, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1977. He then proceeded to the Anglican Grammar School, Nbawsi, where he earned his West African School Certificate (WASC ‘O’ Level) in 1982. Driven by a hunger for both spiritual and academic growth, Isaac gained admission to the renowned Trinity Union Theological College, Umuahia in 1985 and graduated in 1988 with a Diploma in Religious Studies (Dip. RS) from the University of Calabar.
He continued his theological and academic pursuits at the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religious Studies between 1991 and 1994. He further diversified his education by attending the Times Journalism Institute for a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism in 1994. Not one to rest on his laurels, he returned to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree in 1997. His unquenchable thirst for knowledge eventually led him to pursue doctoral studies at Ashland University, Ohio, USA, where he earned a Ph.D. in Social Communication in 2004 as an external student studying from Nigeria.
The journey of faith for Archbishop Nwaobia was marked by a deep personal experience of salvation during his confirmation, under the preaching of Rt. Rev. H.A.I. Afonya (of blessed memory), who expounded on Acts 1:8. It was during this time that Isaac experienced the transforming power of the Holy Spirit and became born again. His early spiritual formation was nurtured through the influence of the Scripture Union (SU), which deeply shaped his personal devotion, evangelical fervor, and doctrinal clarity.
Remarkably, before receiving his ‘O’ Level results, the Church, recognizing his dedication and spiritual potential, sought him out for ministry. On September 9, 1982, the then Bishop of Aba, Rt. Rev. H.A.I. Afonya, employed him as a Church teacher and posted him to St. Mark’s Church, Oyigbo. His devotion and commitment as a Church teacher distinguished him for further ministerial training. Consequently, he was enlisted in the ordination training program at Trinity Union Theological College, Umuahia, where he obtained a Diploma in Theology (Dip. Th).
In 1988, he was ordained into the Holy Order of Deacons by Rt. Rev. Prof. Augustine O. Iwuagwu, the then Bishop of Aba, and later, in 1989, he was priested. His faithfulness and competence in ministry led to his installation as a Canon of St. Michael’s Cathedral, Aba in 1998, and in 2005, he was preferred Archdeacon, all to the glory of God.
The elevation of Isaac Chijioke Nwaobia to the episcopacy came in 2007. He was elected Bishop of the Diocese of Isiala Ngwa South (Anglican Communion) and was consecrated as Bishop in the Church of Nigeria on March 4, 2007, at the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Abuja. His enthronement followed on March 19, 2007, marking the beginning of a highly impactful episcopal ministry.
On Tuesday, September 24, 2019, Bishop Nwaobia was elected the 3rd Archbishop of the Aba Ecclesiastical Province. He was formally presented during the 2019 DIVCCON (Divine Commonwealth Conference) held on November 14, 2020, at the National Christian Centre (Ecumenical Centre), Abuja. Demonstrating confidence in his leadership, the Church re-elected him for a second term as Archbishop on Friday, January 9, 2025. His presentation for this renewed mandate took place on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at St. Cyprian’s Church, Port Harcourt.
Archbishop Nwaobia’s influence extends far beyond his diocesan responsibilities. He has served in numerous Christian ecumenical organizations, including the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN), and the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), among others. His remarkable service in both ecclesiastical and civic contexts has earned him numerous meritorious awards and recognitions from religious, academic, and socio-political bodies, both within and beyond Nigeria.
On the personal front, Archbishop Isaac Chijioke Nwaobia is a devoted family man. He is joyfully married to his beloved wife, Hope Njideka Oguine, a native of Osumenyi in Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Their marriage, solemnized on November 10, 1990, has remained a model of Christian unity and purpose. It is blessed with four wonderful children—two sons and two daughters—namely Oluomachukwu, Chiemerie, Olive, and Emmanuel.
Throughout his episcopal ministry, Archbishop Nwaobia has demonstrated a rare blend of spiritual depth, intellectual clarity, pastoral care, and administrative excellence. His life and work have made an enduring impact on the Church and on countless individuals across Nigeria and beyond. He continues to serve faithfully and fervently, upholding the Gospel of Christ with truth, conviction, and unwavering dedication.
