The Rt. Rev. Akintunde Adedayo Popoola was born on the 15th of July, 1967. He began his early education in Ibadan, completing both nursery and primary school there before proceeding to Federal Government College, Ijanikin, Lagos. Raised in a Christian environment, it was during his secondary school years that he personally encountered Christ, having become deeply convicted of his sinful nature. He surrendered his life to Christ and began his journey of faith in earnest.

He obtained his West African School Certificate in 1984 and gained admission to study Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, graduating in 1989. While on campus, Akintunde joined the Anglican Youth Fellowship and became part of a vibrant spiritual community. This group later evolved into the now widespread Anglican Students Fellowship across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. During one of their intense prayer and fasting meetings, he received a divine call to ordained ministry. However, he was unable to pursue it at that time due to academic obligations.

After completing his National Youth Service in 1990, he worked as a computer field engineer and researcher. Still feeling the weight of God’s call, he sought seminary training and was eventually admitted to Immanuel College of Theology, Ibadan, in 1994 on a part-time basis. He earned a Diploma in Theology in 1998. He later pursued further education, obtaining a Master’s degree in Managerial Psychology (MMP) from the University of Ibadan in 2001, and a Master of Divinity (M.Div) from the Theological College of Northern Nigeria, Bukuru, Jos, in 2009. He is currently enrolled in a doctoral programme at the Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta.

He was ordained a Deacon on 4th August 1996 and became a Priest on 29th June 1997 in the then Diocese of Ibadan. Following the creation of the Diocese of Ibadan North in 1998, he continued his ministry as a non-stipendiary priest. In 2001, after receiving divine confirmation, he resigned from his lucrative ICT business and was absorbed into full-time ministry by the Rt. Rev. ‘Segun Okubadejo.

In May 2002, Canon Akintunde Popoola was temporarily released to join the vision team at the Church of Nigeria Headquarters in Abuja under the leadership of the then Primate, the Most Rev. Peter J. Akinola. There, he played a crucial role in establishing the Church’s digital presence and implemented awareness and training programmes that helped every Nigerian Anglican diocese and bishop access email and internet communication tools.

By 2005, he had been appointed Director of Communications for the Church of Nigeria, managing information, publicity, and IT systems. In this capacity, he also served as the official spokesman for the Church of Nigeria, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and the Global South Anglicans, especially during Archbishop Akinola’s leadership.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Popoola has served in various parishes across the Dioceses of Ibadan, Ibadan North, Abuja, Kubwa, and Offa. A passionate evangelist, he has been actively involved in church planting, growth, and strategic expansion wherever he served. He was preferred a Canon in November 2002 and elevated to Archdeacon in 2005.

He was elected and consecrated as the Bishop of Offa Diocese on 13th July 2008. On February 7th, 2018, he was further elected by translation as Bishop of Ibadan South Diocese.

Bishop Akintunde Popoola is married to Dr. Oyebola O. Popoola, a physicist. Their marriage is blessed with three children: Toromoluwa, Oluwasemilore, and Shalom.
