On Sunday, 13th October 2024, a special thanksgiving service was held at the Headquarters of the Nigerian Air Force Chaplaincy (Protestant) in Abuja to honour the appointment of the new Director of Chaplaincy, The Venerable Dr Group Captain P.D. Otowo. The service was marked by heartfelt gratitude, moving testimonies, and joyous celebration of both the Director’s ministry and God’s grace upon his life and service.

The event was attended by high-ranking military officers and chaplains from various branches of the Nigerian Air Force Chaplaincy. A highlight of the service was the sermon delivered by The Most Rev’d Dr Emmanuel Egbunu, Bishop of Lokoja Diocese, Church of Nigeria, who had previously ordained the Venerable Otowo. He spoke on the significance of thanksgiving, urging the congregation to remain grateful to God in all circumstances. His message deeply resonated with the audience, emphasizing the blessings that flow from a heart of gratitude.

A proud moment for the Church of Nigeria came with the recognition of the Venerable Otowo, an Anglican priest, assuming the distinguished position of Director in the Air Force—a significant achievement for the Church. Adding to the occasion was the presence of the General Secretary of the Church of Nigeria, the Venerable Dr Gershinen Paul Dajur, who conveyed greetings from the Primate, The Most Rev’d Dr Henry C. Ndukuba. During the service, the Venerable Dajur also led a special prayer for children brought forward for dedication by their families, enhancing the spiritual significance of the event.

In a historic first for the Nigerian Armed Forces, the service brought together the Directors of Chaplaincy (Protestant) for the Army (The Venerable Lt Col. T.E. Ogbonyomi), Navy (The Reverend Lieutenant Commander Joseph Elises), and Air Force (The Venerable Dr Group Captain P.D. Otowo)—all of whom are Anglican priests of Oyo, Jalingo and Lokoja Dioceses of the Church of Nigeria respectively. These Chaplains were raised by their parents in the Barracks. This unprecedented gathering highlighted the leadership and influence of the Anglican Church within the military chaplaincies.

The occasion was further enriched by goodwill messages and commendations, particularly from the former Chief of Defense Staff, General Leo Irabor, who praised the Venerable Otowo for his exemplary service and leadership. The thanksgiving service was a memorable event, filled with faith, unity, and overwhelming gratitude from all who attended.
