COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 2ND SESSION OF THE 5TH SYNOD OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF OHAJI/EGBEMA HELD AT ANGLICAN CHURCH OF THE PENTECOST, OBOSA, ASSA, OHAJI/EGBEMA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, IMO STATE, FROM THURSDAY 4TH JULY, 2024 TO SUNDAY 7TH JULY, 2024.

PREAMBLE:

The 2nd Session of the 5th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Ohaji/Egbema held at the Anglican Church of the Pentecost, Obosa, Assa, from Thursday 4th July, 2024 to Sunday 7th July, 2024, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and presided over by the Rt. Rev. Chidi Collins Oparaojiaku, Ph.D, Bishop and President of the Synod, Anglican Diocese of Ohaji/Egbema. In attendance were the Bishop’s wife, Dr (Mrs.) Joy Oparaojiaku, 46 clergy and 177 members of the House of Laity. The Synod also received in attendance many dignitaries and priests who attended the opening service and presentation of the Bishops’ Address.

THEME:

The theme of the Synod was “How can this be?” The Justification and Meritocracy for Intentional Discipleship (John 3:9)”
DISCIPLESHIP OF CHRIST FOR THE BENEFIT OF SOCIETY
a. The Synod urges Christians to focus more on the work of discipleship for Christ in the interest of the larger society rather than on mundane things notwithstanding undue pressures of the times.
b. The Synod enjoins parents to take seriously the work of discipleship in the lives of their children (commonly called ‘parenting’) as same will ensure that the purposes of God for those children are accomplished, making the society a better place for all.

OHAJI/EGBEMA

a. The Synod thanks and appreciates the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma, for, during his tenure in office as Governor, one of our lawyers from Ohaji/Egbema, Hon. Justice Chidi Ononogbo, KSC, was sworn in as a Judge of the High Court of Imo State. In the same vein it further notes with delight the appointment of other sons and daughters of Ohaji/Egbema into other sensitive positions in government and beseeches him to do more in this regards.

b. Synod notes with dismay that the numerous oil and gas operations littering the length and breadth of Ohaji Egbema, including the ASSA Gas Plant Project, which is one of the largest Gas fields in Africa, have not yielded positive imprints on the economic landscape of the local government area. It urges all the stakeholders including governments at all levels and these multinational companies to ensure that these economic activities are conducted in such a manner to spur and engender rapid and visible development of the area.

IMO STATE:

a. The Synod congratulates His Excellency Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma on his victory in the last gubernatorial elections. It however urges the Governor to be magnanimous in victory and appeals to all our politicians concerned to ensure that they sheath their swords now that elections are over and to work in concord with one another towards ensuring good governance of the State in the interest of the general public.

b. The Synod appreciates and thanks the Governor of Imo State, for the many laudable and landmark projects now visible in the state; it is gladdened by the commendable standard of these projects and encourages the State Government to continue to improve upon these accomplishments.

c. The Synod congratulates the Governor of Imo State on his appointment by the President Federal Republic of Nigeria, as the Governor representing the South East Geographical zone in the Board of Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).

    NIGERIA

    1. The Synod congratulates Mr. President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dist. Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his 365 days in office as president. In this regard, it notes with measured satisfaction that the president has demonstrated a clear grabs of the bold and decisive steps/operations which need to be undertaken to tackle the myriad of problems facing the country.
    2. The Synod however encourages the president to revisit the 2014 CONFAB Reports as same has the capacity to stabilize the economy and ameliorate obvious distortions in our national relationships.
    3. The Synod urges the President to ignore those angling for creation of state controlled police except there is a shift in political paradigm. It notes with grave concern that given the political culture prevalent in our nation, a system of state controlled police will amount to giving a sitting Governor more swords to destroy all his perceived political opponents.
    4. The Synod frowns at the alarming wave of accidents now routinely occasioned on our roads by trucks and trailers. Synod urges government to ensure the operators of these vehicles are properly trained and their roadworthiness closely and periodically monitored.
    5. The Synod urges the Federal government not to yield to any temptation to attempt to fix a NATIONAL MINIMUM for Nigerians; Government should fix minimum wage for civil servants only. It notes that any adventure to fix a minimum wage for all Nigerians will only cause avoidable economic dislocations to the detriment of the entire citizenry.

    CONCLUSION

The Synod urges the faithful to continue to have hope in God. It urges Christians to be intentional in following the Lord Jesus Christ and in order to be able to disciple other believers, for the good of mankind.
