The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) is set to partner with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in its efforts to promote justice, peace, dispute resolution, and the overall welfare of the Church community and the nation at large.

Speaking on behalf of The Most Rev’d Dr Henry Ndukuba, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), The Rt Rev’d Moses Tabwaye, Bishop of the Diocese of Gwagwalada, highlighted the purpose of the visit and the mission of the Church.

Bishop Tabwaye stated that the mission of the Church of Nigeria is closely aligned with the principles of justice, equity, and peace, and acknowledged the pivotal role played by the NHRC in promoting, protecting, and advancing human rights across the nation.

“The Church is committed to being a voice for the voiceless and to fostering a culture of respect for human dignity. Today, we are exploring potential partnerships that will enable us to pool resources and capacities in advocating for justice and human rights at all levels of society,” he said.

He added that the Church believes, by the grace of God, meaningful progress can be made in addressing the many human rights challenges faced in Nigeria. This visit, he said, aims to establish synergy between the Church’s Directorate of Justice and Peace and the work of the National Human Rights Commission.

The Director of Justice, Equity and Peace for the Church of Nigeria, Venerable Amos Adebayo, noted that while the Church places a strong emphasis on welfare, it also recognises the growing relevance of human rights issues. He stated that these concerns must be integrated into the Church’s social mission and community engagement.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Dr Tony Ojukwu OFR, SAN, commended the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) for its exemplary leadership both within and beyond the country, and for its unwavering stance over the years on issues of human rights.

He remarked that the Church is a vital partner in the Commission’s work, given its extensive following and its ability to engage people across different languages and regions.

Dr Ojukwu noted that one of the recurring issues reported to the Commission is domestic violence—a matter that the Church is well-placed to help address, in collaboration with the NHRC.

He announced that the Commission is open to a strategic partnership with the Church and will establish a technical working group comprising representatives from both institutions to jointly promote justice, peace, and social welfare across the nation.

He further emphasised that as part of this collaborative effort, the NHRC will provide education and capacity-building opportunities for members of the Church, equipping them with knowledge about their rights and responsibilities. This, he said, will enable the Church’s leadership to speak and act from an informed and empowered standpoint.

Other team members of the Church of Nigeria on this visit include, The Venerable Barrister Ernest Onuoha, The Venerable Dr. Benjamin Idume, The Venerable Dr. Dallimore Odigie, Rev’d Gbenga Fatoye, Mrs Nkiruka Nwofor, and Engr. Korede Akintunde among others.
