The Most Rev. Dr. Michael Olusina Fape is a distinguished church leader, theologian, educator, and scholar who currently serves as the Bishop of the Diocese of Remo and the Archbishop of the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).

Archbishop Fape began his formal education at St. Jude’s Primary School, Ipogun (1966–1971), followed by his secondary education at St. Paul’s Secondary Modern School, Ilara-Mokin (1972–1974), where he earned the Secondary Modern School Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to St. John/Mary’s College, Owo, for professional teacher training from 1975 to 1978, culminating in the award of the Teachers’ Grade II Certificate. Responding to a divine call to ministry, he enrolled at Immanuel College of Theology (1980–1983), where he obtained a Diploma in Religious Studies in 1982 and a Diploma in Theology in 1983.

Furthering his academic journey, Archbishop Fape attended the University of Ibadan between 1984 and 1987 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Religious Studies, Second Class Upper Division. In pursuit of higher theological education, he studied at Yale University Divinity School, New Haven, Connecticut, U.S.A., earning a Master of Sacred Theology (S.T.M.) in Pastoral Counselling and New Testament Ethics in 1990. He then proceeded to the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, for doctoral studies, obtaining a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies in 1996. He also undertook post-doctoral research at Oak Hill Theological College, London, in 2000/2001.

Throughout his academic journey, Archbishop Fape received numerous scholarly awards, including the Bishop Kale Prize (1987) for Best Graduating Student in Religious Studies at the University of Ibadan, the Seabury-Walmsley Fellowship for his S.T.M. degree at Yale, the Langham Trust Scholarship for his Ph.D., and the Langham Writers’ Post-Doctoral Fellowship.

His professional teaching experience began at St. Patrick’s R.C.M. School, Idanre, Ondo State (1978–1980). He later became a Lecturer at Immanuel College of Theology, Ibadan (1990–2001) and was appointed Dean of Archbishop Vining College of Theology, Akure (2001–2003).

Ordained a Deacon on 17th July 1983 and priested on 8th July 1984, Archbishop Fape’s clerical journey included his preferment as Canon (1995) and Archdeacon (1997) in the Diocese of Ibadan. He was consecrated as the second Bishop of Remo on 16th November 2003 and later elected Archbishop of the Lagos Ecclesiastical Province on 2nd June 2016, with a second term confirmed on 6th June 2023.

His parish experience spans numerous local and international assignments. He began as Curate at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Ijebu-Imusin (1983–1985), then served as Priest-in-Charge at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Imuwen-Ijebu (1985–1987). He was the pioneer priest at Adeola Odutola Anglican Church, Ijebu-Ode (1987–1990). While in the U.S.A., he was Honorary Priest at St. John’s Episcopal Church, New Haven (1989–1990). Back in Nigeria, he served as Assisting Priest and later Vicar at All Souls’ Church, Bodija, Ibadan. During his Ph.D. studies in Scotland, he served at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Aberdeen (1992–1997). Returning to Nigeria, he resumed parish service at All Souls’ Church and served as Vicar and Archdeacon before transitioning to theological education leadership in Akure, where he also pastored the Chapel of the Annunciation.

Archbishop Fape has made substantial contributions to the Anglican Communion at the local, national, and global levels. He served as the first Provincial Clerical Secretary for Province One (1999–2000), and as Clerical Secretary of the Church of Nigeria (2002–2003). He was appointed Regional Associate for Africa by TEAC (2005–2009) and contributed as Theological Consultant to the Bible in the Life of the Church Project in London (2009–2010). He has served as Chairman of the Supra Diocesan Board West (2019–2021), and currently chairs the Church of Nigeria Theological Resource Group and the LAIBONK Clergy Welfare Foundation of the Supra West. He is also a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches (WCC).

A prolific scholar, Archbishop Fape has over 25 publications to his name, including books, monographs, and journal articles. His works include Paul’s Concept of Baptism (Edwin Mellen Press, UK), Where Are the Anglican Youths?, You Shall be Witnesses to Me, The Year of Jubilee, and Powers in Encounter with Power (Christian Focus Publications, UK). He contributed to The New Dictionary of Biblical Theology (IVP Press, UK) with an article on Baptism.

He is a member of the Tyndale Fellowship for Biblical Research, Cambridge, and the Fellowship of Langham Scholars, England. His scholarly engagements have taken him to prominent conferences such as the British New Testament Conferences (1993, 1994, 1996), the Tyndale Fellowship Jubilee Conference (1994), the Consultation on the Future of Anglicanism at Oxford (2002), TEAC in Singapore (2007), and leadership gatherings at the Anglican Centre in Rome (2010). He also participated in the All African Bishops’ Conferences in Entebe, Uganda (2010), and the GAFCON Conferences in Nairobi, Kenya (2013) and Kigali, Rwanda (2023).

Archbishop Michael Olusina Fape is married to Mrs. Oluwatoyin Kehinde Fape, a retired Deputy Director with the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI), Kaduna. Their union is blessed with three God-fearing children.
