The Rt. Rev’d Christian Esezi Ide was born on Monday, September 21, 1959, at 3:05 a.m. at the Nigerian Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), near Benin City, in the then Mid-West Region (later Bendel State, now Edo State). His life has been marked by academic excellence, spiritual commitment, and an unrelenting drive for mission and reconciliation within the Church.

Education and Academic Pursuits

He began his formal education at Isuiwa Community School, NIFOR, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (1966–1972). He continued to Edo Boys High School (Adolo College), Benin City (1973–1977) and later enrolled in the Institute of Continuing Education, Benin.

Bishop Ide obtained his Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in English and Religion from the then Bendel State University, Abraka Campus, in 1986. He proceeded to earn a B.A. (Ed.) in English from the same university in 1990.

Pursuing his passion for knowledge further, he gained admission to the University of Ibadan in 1991 and obtained a Master’s Degree in Library, Archival, and Information Studies (MLS), graduating with a commendable weighted average of 60.8%.

Call to Ministry

While considering a Ph.D. after his MLS, Bishop Ide had a divine revelation: he saw himself in a church with a library, which God interpreted to him as a call to leave the library profession and pursue ordained ministry.

He responded to this calling by enrolling in Immanuel College of Theology, Ibadan, in 1993, and graduated in 1996 with a Diploma in Theology (Dip. Th.).

Though he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour in 1979, it was during a critical illness that he made a vow to serve God if healed. The healing came miraculously, and the vow became a lifelong mission.

Ordination and Early Ministry

Bishop Ide was ordained a Deacon on Sunday, July 7, 1996, at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Warri, and priested on Sunday, July 6, 1997, at St. Peter’s Church, Igbudu-Warri, both by The Rt. Rev’d N.A. Enuku.

His first posting was at St. Peter’s Church, Igbudu, and he was soon assigned to Adam Igbudu Christian Institute, Emevor, as Vice Principal and Curate of St. Michael’s Church, Emevor. Between 1998 and 1999, he acted as Vicar and Superintendent of the Emevor District. He became Acting Principal of the Institute in January 2000 and Substantive Principal in January 2002.

In December 2002, he was preferred a Canon by Bishop Enuku.

Episcopal Ministry

After nearly a decade of impactful ministry in Emevor, Bishop Ide was elected Bishop of Warri Diocese on Wednesday, June 28, 2006. His consecration took place on August 20, 2006, at the Christian National Centre, Abuja, and he was enthroned on August 23, 2006, at the Cathedral Church of St. Andrew, Okere Warri.

His election came during a critical time—the Diocese had been embroiled in a three-year crisis. God used Bishop Ide to reconcile factions, restore peace, and lead the Diocese with a shepherd’s heart.

Evangelism, Mission, and Church Growth

Under his leadership, the Diocese of Warri witnessed phenomenal growth. In 2009, the Diocese of Sapele was created from Warri, beginning with 55 churches, leaving Warri with 86. Today, Warri Diocese boasts 136 churches, a result of Bishop Ide’s vigorous missionary strategy. To aid outreach efforts, the Diocese acquired two buses for evangelism to remote areas.

In 2008, responding to reports of no Anglican presence in Côte d’Ivoire, the Diocese launched a missionary effort to that country in partnership with the Church of Nigeria Missionary Society (CNMS). Within a few years, four churches were planted:

  • All Saints’ Church, Abidjan

  • St. Philip’s Church, San Pedro

  • A church in Macoury

  • A church in Bouaké

Before handing over to CNMS, the Diocese ensured proper registration of the Anglican Communion with the Ivorian government and saw two church buildings nearing completion.
