Biography of The Bishop of Nnewi Diocese – The Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obinna Obi

The Right Reverend Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obinna Obi is the Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). He was elected Bishop on Wednesday, August 21, 2019, and consecrated on Tuesday, September 24, 2019, at the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter, Asaba, Delta State, by the then Primate of All Nigeria, His Grace, the Most Rev. Nicholas Dikeriehi Ologodo Okoh. His enthronement took place three days later on Friday, September 27, 2019, at the Cathedral Church of Saint Mary, Nnewi, succeeding the pioneer Bishop, His Grace, the Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Izundu Nmesinwa Okpala, who retired on September 17, 2019.

Born on December 17, 1965, in Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Bishop Ndubuisi Obi comes from a devoted Christian heritage. His father, Rev. Canon Abel Okwuchukwu Obi, served in the Diocese on the Niger, while his mother, Mrs. Jane Uzoma Obi, was the pioneer Principal of Holy Innocents Juniorate Convent, Nkpor. He is one of five children and part of a family deeply rooted in the Anglican tradition, with both paternal and maternal grandfathers having served as catechists.

He began his early education at Central School, Urban Primary School, Nsukka, and Ezechima Primary School, Onitsha. He completed his secondary education at Dennis Memorial Grammar School (DMGS), Onitsha, in 1982. His theological journey began at St. Paul’s University College, Awka (SPUCA), where he obtained a Diploma in Theology and a Diploma in Religious Studies (affiliated with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka). He later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies (B.A. Rel.) from the same institution. In 2016, he completed a Master’s degree in Religious Studies, focusing on the New Testament, at Crowther Graduate Theological Seminary, Abeokuta (affiliated with Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo).

Before joining the ordained ministry, Bishop Obi was active in business at Main Market, Onitsha, for over fourteen years. His deep involvement in church life at Saint Mark’s Anglican Church, Omagba, Onitsha, included roles such as People’s Warden, Church Secretary, Choir Chairman, and leader in both the Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF) and Evangelical Fellowship in the Anglican Communion (EFAC).

Responding to a divine call, he entered full-time ministry in the year 2000. Sent to SPUCA by Rt. Rev. Ken Sandy Okeke, the then Bishop of the Diocese on the Niger, he became the President of the Students’ Union Government in the 2002/2003 academic session. He was ordained Deacon on December 14, 2003, and Priested in December 2004. He was made a Canon in December 2010 and preferred Archdeacon in December 2011.

Bishop Obi is known for his evangelical zeal and commitment to biblical teaching. He is a passionate evangelist with a heart for people and the Gospel. Since becoming Bishop of Nnewi, he has emphasized personal and street evangelism as a core mandate for believers in the Diocese.

He married Mrs. Ukamaka Zipporah Obi on May 20, 1995. Their home has been richly blessed with four biological and four foster children.
