The first edition of the 2025 Standing Committee Meeting of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, with the theme: “The Bond of Peace: The Core of the Life and Ministry of the Church” taken from Ephesians 4:3, has commenced in Port Harcourt the Rivers State capital.

The five days meeting started with arrival of delegates from across Nigeria which is holding at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church and St Peter’s Deanery, Hospital Road Port Harcourt, is expected to have over 700 delegates from the over 160 dioceses in the Church of Nigeria. The delegates comprises of Archbishops, bishops and their wives, Laities, Clergymen among others.

The Standing Committee serves as an arm of the General Synod of the Church, which is the highest decision-making body of the Church. While the General Synod meets once every three years, the Standing Committee convenes twice annually to govern the Church during the interim. The meeting will be presided over by the Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, The Most Rev’d Dr. Henry C. Ndukuba.

Addressing the Church of Nigeria Media Crew at the venue of the meeting, the host bishop and bishop of Diocese of Niger Delta, The Rt. Rev’d Dr. Emmanuel Okwuchi Oko-Jaja stated that the 2025 Standing Committee Meeting will be one of the best in the church of Nigeria history.

Rt. Rev’d Oko-Jaja who described the theme of the meeting as apt and relevant considering the division in the religious community, stressed the need for Christians to eschew disunity and embrace the bond of peace and unity to advance Christianity in Nigeria.

He said: “We are grateful to God for all he has been doing and I can assure you that are almost there in terms of logistics for this hosting.
“The theme is apt and relevant because based on what we are having now, it is imperative that the church be reminded of the issue of bond of peace and unity because you can see that whether in the church and circular wise, a lot of divisions and discordant tones, everybody is talking about their own but that is not what the word of God told us.”

Bishop Oko-Jaja further expressed optimism that with the theme of the Meeting, Nigerians especially Christians would have a rethink, shun divisive tendencies and do the right thing for the overall development of the country.

Also speaking, the Alternate Planning Committee Chairman of the meeting, Sir Franklin Gigi Dienye-Umin disclosed that adequate preparations have been concluded to ensure smooth hosting of the Meeting including accommodation, security, medicals etc.

Sir Dienye-Umin while welcoming delegates from across the country to Port Harcourt, the state capital, said Rivers State is peaceful and urged delegates to enjoy the hospital disposition of the state throughout their stay.

“For accommodation, the delegates registered well on time and we are doing everything to ensure that they check into their hotels and even those that came earlier, we made arrangements for them. Everyone has a hotel, in fact, there is no challenge with accommodation,” he stated.

“In the area of security and traffic, we are working with the government security agencies and they have given us their support in terms of the police, civil defense even Road Safety, we have everywhere covered. Also internally, the Boys Brigade is there, the Youth Fellowship, all hands are on deck to ensure that we have a successful event and God being our helper, we’ll deliver to their expectations,” he added.
